Here is a creative way of using a purpose built metal bars as sunshade. Although it does not look like the usual sunshade, the metal bars in the photos below will shade direct sunlight once the sun is higher in the sky from around 11am to 3pm. The metal bars do not obstruct the view totally from the inside. From the outside, it does provide a slight measure of privacy.
The main purpose of the bars is to prevent direct sun from entering the house through the windows. It also prevents sunlight from hitting the walls directly during the day thus the walls would not retain as much heat. Metal cools faster compared to brick or concrete and by evening, the house will be a lot cooler compared to a similar house without this feature. This means less load on your air conditioner or the owner may not even need to turn the air conditioner on.
The metal bars in this way becomes dual function since you do not need to install grills for those windows. Note that for this case, the bars are horizontal. If the metal bars are in a vertical position, then the effectiveness shielding the house will be much less.
The effect is caused by the metal bars casting a shadow due to the overlapping effect and the angle of the sun.
The effect is like creating a second skin for your house. Something interesting to consider to keep your house cooler.
